The Encyclopedia of Diderot and d’Alembert Collaborative Translation Project launched in 2002 with twenty articles translated from the Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie (which launched in 1751). By 2022, the number of translated articles published on the site exceeded 3000, and that number continues to grow through the work of volunteer translators. The website was developed by the Scholarly Publishing Office of the University of Michigan Libraries (later Michigan Publishing); in 2024 it was completely rebuilt by LSA Technology Services (University of Michigan) through their Digital Humanities Initiative.

Following in the footsteps of Diderot and d’Alembert, this website is a collaborative effort of  volunteers who share an interest in the Enlightenment and a belief in the value of making freely available to English readers articles from their encyclopedia. Although we cannot hope to translate all 70,000 articles, we continue to post new translations as they come in. This is an ongoing project.
