But there is another story, one of a man who navigated slavery, disability, and the sexual advances of his enslaver, a woman who supposedly obtained him as a \u201cfreebie\u201d in the purchase of a candelabrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this episode, historian <strong>Emily Lamond <\/strong>places Clesippus at the center of the story, exploring the social and cultural construction of disability in Roman Italy. She reimagines Clesippus\u2019s enslaved experiences and attempts to see him as he might have seen himself\u2014beyond what was chiseled into this tomb on the Via Appia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalscholarship.umich.edu\/lsa-history\/showcase\/season-4-episode-3-transcript\/\" data-type=\"showcase\" data-id=\"1762\">View the full episode transcript<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"historian-biography\">Historian Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Emily Lamond <\/strong>is a PhD graduate from the University of Michigan Interdepartmental Program in Ancient History (IPAH) and will be assistant professor of Latin literature and Roman history at McMaster University.
